PRP for Hair Loss: Sessions, Results and What to Expect

PRP injects plasma from your own blood into thinning areas of the scalp. Most patients have one session a month for 3 months, then one every 3 to 6 months. Each session takes about 10 minutes, and less hair fall is often the first sign it is working.

How it works

A small amount of your blood is drawn and separated, and the plasma is injected into the area with hair loss. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and usually needs no downtime. The American Academy of Dermatology says studies show it can be a safe and effective treatment. [1]

Session schedule

Most patients come back once a month for 3 months, then every 3 to 6 months to maintain results. Within the first few months, many people notice they are losing less hair. [1]

Other treatments to ask about

  • Minoxidil: applied to the scalp once or twice a day. Results take about 6 to 12 months, and fade if you stop.
  • Finasteride: a daily tablet for male pattern hair loss. Improvement usually shows after about 4 months, and lasts only while you take it.

What to ask a clinic

  • Will a dermatologist diagnose the cause of your hair loss first?
  • Is the price per session or for a package, and how many sessions do they plan?
  • Who gives the injections?
  • Should PRP be combined with minoxidil or other treatment in your case?
