Acne Scar Treatment: Options by Scar Type

Dermatologists match acne scar treatment to the scar type. Depressed scars are treated with peels, fillers, lasers, microneedling, radiofrequency or surgery, and raised scars with injections, lasers or creams. Treatment usually starts only once active acne is under control.

Depressed scars

  • Chemical peels: mild peels usually need 3 to 5 treatments, 2 to 4 weeks apart.
  • Fillers: usually a series of treatments, plus touch-ups.
  • Laser resurfacing: some lasers need more sessions than others.
  • Microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling
  • Scar surgery or dermabrasion, under local anesthesia, for deeper scars

Raised and keloid scars

Raised scars are treated with corticosteroid injections, lasers or prescription creams. Keloids often need a combination, such as injections, laser, surgery or freezing. [1]

Options for darker skin

The American Academy of Dermatology says microneedling, radiofrequency and radiofrequency microneedling are safe for all skin tones. Ask your dermatologist how other options, such as lasers and peels, suit your skin. [1]

Treat active acne first

Scar treatment usually begins once acne is under control. [1]

What to ask a clinic

  • Which scar types do I have, and which treatment suits each?
  • How many sessions do you expect, and what does the full course cost?
  • Who performs the treatment: a dermatologist or a technician?
  • How will you protect against pigmentation on my skin tone?
