How TopRatedIn Ranks Businesses

One formula ranks every business. Nobody pays for a position, and nobody can edit theirs.

The formula

For each niche in each city, we collect every operating business with at least 20 reviews. Each gets a review-weighted rating:

score = (v ÷ (v + m)) × R + (m ÷ (v + m)) × C

R is the business's average rating and v its number of reviews. C is the average rating of all businesses in that niche and city, and m is 200 reviews.

A business with few reviews is pulled toward the city average, so a 5.0 from 12 reviews can't outrank a 4.8 from 900. The top 10 scores are listed. Ties go to the business with more reviews.

Updates

Each list is refreshed about every 30 days, and shows the date its data was collected.

Who runs this site

TopRatedIn is owned by the founder of Citeahead, a marketing agency. No business pays for its position, and Citeahead clients are ranked by the same formula as everyone else.

How the site makes money

Some pages have a button to request quotes through a partner service, which may pay us a referral fee. That button sits outside the ranked list and never changes who is listed or in what order.

What we never sell

  • A position on a list, or a place on one.
  • Removal of a competitor.
  • Changes to ratings or reviews.
