Who is a good candidate

You need enough healthy donor hair, and the thinning area must be able to grow hair. A dermatologist checks this with a scalp exam and sometimes a blood test or biopsy. A man in his 20s may be asked to try hair loss medicine first. A fuller head is realistic, a full head of hair may not be. [2]

The procedure

Surgery takes about 4 to 8 hours, usually under local anesthetic. The surgeon either removes a strip of scalp, which leaves a long narrow scar, or takes out individual hairs, which takes longer but avoids that scar. Large transplants may need a second visit the next day. [2]

Results timeline

  • 2 to 8 weeks: the transplanted hair falls out. This is expected.
  • Around 3 months: hair may look thinner than before. Also expected.
  • 6 to 9 months: most patients see results. Some take 12 months.
