Teeth Whitening: In-Office vs At-Home and What Works

In-office whitening usually takes one visit, while custom trays from a dentist take a few days to a few weeks. Yellow teeth usually respond well, brown teeth less so, and gray teeth may not bleach at all. Whitening doesn't change crowns, veneers or fillings.

Your options

  • In-office bleaching: the dentist protects your gums and applies bleach, usually in one visit.
  • Take-home trays from a dentist: custom trays with instructions, over a few days to a few weeks.
  • Over-the-counter kits: lower bleach strength than a dentist's. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
  • Whitening toothpaste: removes surface stains only, without changing the tooth's color.

What responds and what doesn't

Stains from food, drink and tobacco can respond. Yellow teeth usually bleach well, brown teeth may respond less, and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. Whitening won't change caps, veneers, crowns or fillings, and won't fix discoloration from medicines or injury. [1]

Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect and is usually temporary. Overusing whiteners can damage enamel or gums, so follow the directions. Talk to a dentist first, since whitening may not fix your type of discoloration. [1]
