Dental Implants: The Process, Healing Time and Who Qualifies

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone that holds a crown, bridge or denture. Bone has to grow around the post first, so some people wait up to several months before the replacement tooth goes on. Overall health matters more than age in deciding who qualifies.

The three stages

  • Surgery: the dentist places the post in the jawbone. A soft or cold food diet may be recommended while it heals.
  • Healing: bone grows around the implant and holds it in place. Some patients wait up to several months, while others get the implant and tooth in one visit.
  • The new tooth: a single tooth gets a custom crown, and several teeth get a bridge or denture. A temporary one may be used in the meantime.

Who is a good candidate

Health matters more than age. Chronic illnesses such as diabetes or leukemia can interfere with healing, and tobacco use can slow it. Your dentist may ask your physician to assess you before surgery. [1]

What to ask a dentist

  • Who places the implant, and who makes the crown?
  • Does the quote include the post, the abutment and the crown, plus any bone graft or scans?
  • How long do they expect healing to take in your case?
  • What will insurance cover, and what is your share?
