Laser Tattoo Removal: Sessions, Colors and Side Effects

Laser tattoo removal breaks ink into small particles that the body clears over time. It takes multiple sessions a few weeks apart. Black and dark blue are easiest to remove, while green, red and yellow are hardest, and complete removal isn't always possible.

How it works

Laser energy breaks the ink into small particles, which the immune system gradually removes. Different inks absorb different wavelengths, so a multicolored tattoo may need more than one laser. [1]

Sessions and results

Removal takes multiple treatments spaced a few weeks apart, so the skin can heal. The number depends on the tattoo's size and colors. Complete removal may take many sessions, or may not be possible. [1]

Which colors are hardest

  • Easiest: black and dark blue
  • Hardest: green, red and yellow
  • Tricky: flesh-tone, white and permanent makeup, which can turn black when lasered

Side effects

The FDA compares the feeling to a thin rubber band snapping on the skin, and numbing cream can be used. Possible effects include skin lighter than the surrounding area, scarring, infection, pinpoint bleeding, redness and soreness. [1]

Avoid removal creams and kits

The FDA hasn't approved any tattoo removal creams, ointments or do-it-yourself kits. They can't reach the deeper ink and may cause rashes, burns or scars. Lasers are cleared for use by, or under the supervision of, a health care professional. [1]
