CoolSculpting: How Fat Freezing Works, Results and Risks

CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) uses cold to destroy fat cells in a small bulge that diet and exercise haven't shifted. It usually takes 2 sessions, and most people see the full effect 3 to 6 months after the last one. It is not a weight-loss treatment.

How it works

A handheld device cools the treated area to destroy fat cells without injuring the skin, nerves or other tissue. Sessions usually last 30 to 90 minutes, and most people go back to normal activities straight away. [1]

Sessions and results

Most people need about 2 treatment sessions. Changes can show as early as 3 weeks, and the full effect usually appears 3 to 6 months after the last treatment. Results are subtle compared with liposuction. [1]

Who it suits

The best candidates have a small bulge of fat that remains despite diet and exercise, and a weight in the normal range for their height. [1]

Side effects and risks

Swelling, bruising, discomfort and a burning or stinging feeling are common and temporary. In rare cases, freezing can cause long-term pain or increase the amount of fat in the treated area. [1]

How to choose a provider

  • Ask how many cycles each area needs, and whether the quote covers all of them.
  • Ask what results to expect for your body type, and see before-and-after photos of their own patients.
  • Ask what they do if fat increases in the treated area.
