Microneedling: What It Treats, Sessions and Downtime

Microneedling uses fine needles to make tiny punctures in the skin, and can fade acne scars, dark spots, fine lines and stretch marks. Acne scars typically need 3 to 5 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, and most people can go back to work the same day.

What it treats

  • Acne scars and surgical or injury scars
  • Dark spots, melasma and uneven tone
  • Large pores and rough texture
  • Fine lines, wrinkles and mild sagging
  • Stretch marks

Sessions and results

For acne scars, dermatologists often recommend 3 to 5 treatments, 2 to 4 weeks apart. Results build gradually and can take several months to show fully. A yearly maintenance session is sometimes suggested. [1]

Downtime

Redness and a sunburn-like feeling are common and usually fade within a few days to a week. Most people can go back to work or school right away, but should wait 24 hours before wearing makeup. [1]

Who should avoid it

  • People who heal slowly or poorly, or who form keloid scars
  • People with a weakened immune system
  • People being treated for skin cancer or receiving radiation in the area
  • Anyone with a recent tan or sunburn, a skin infection or deep pimples, until it clears
  • Anyone who took isotretinoin in the last month

Spa, dermatologist or at home?

The American Academy of Dermatology says at-home and non-medical spa devices usually aren't meant to puncture the skin, so results are less noticeable. When microneedling is done by someone without medical training, the risk of infection, scarring and lasting discoloration goes up. Ask whether a medical provider performs or supervises the treatment.
