Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins: Results and Recovery

Sclerotherapy treats spider veins by injecting a solution or foam that makes the vein close and fade. Each session takes 15 minutes to an hour, treated veins usually fade within a few weeks, and compression stockings are worn for one to three weeks afterwards.

How it works

A fine needle injects a solution or foam into the vein. It irritates the vein lining so the vein closes, and blood reroutes through healthier veins. It is done in the office, usually without anesthesia, in 15 minutes to an hour. [1]

Results

Treated veins usually fade within a few weeks, and full results can take up to two months. Several treatments may be needed, depending on how many veins there are and their size. [1]

Recovery

You can walk straight away, and moving your legs helps prevent clots. Compression stockings or bandages are worn for one to three weeks. Most people return to normal activities right away, but should keep the area out of the sun for two weeks. [1]

Side effects and risks

Common effects are bruising, raised red areas, small sores, darkened lines or spots, and clusters of tiny red vessels. Rare risks include inflammation, blood clots and allergic reactions. [1]

What to tell your provider

  • If you are pregnant. Most doctors recommend waiting until after delivery.
  • Heart disease, cancer or a clotting disorder
  • Medicines and supplements you take
  • Smoking or birth control pills, which can raise clot risk
  • Allergies
