Laser Skin Resurfacing: Recovery Time and What to Expect

Ablative laser resurfacing removes the upper layers of skin and heats the deeper layers to build collagen, treating wrinkles, scars, blemishes and uneven pigment. Full healing takes 10 to 21 days, which makes it one of the bigger-downtime med spa treatments.

What it treats

  • Wrinkles
  • Scarring
  • Blemishes
  • Irregular pigment

Recovery timeline

  • Swelling: 24 to 48 hours
  • Itching or stinging: 12 to 72 hours
  • Old skin peels off: 5 to 7 days after treatment
  • Full healing: 10 to 21 days, depending on the size and location of the area

After the first 24 hours, the area is cleaned four to five times a day and covered with an ointment such as petroleum jelly. Oil-free makeup is advised for two to three months after healing, along with sun avoidance and sunscreen. [1]
